Pedro Martinez didn't sign with the Phillies today. Just a matter of time...
The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (AAA) beat the Rochester Red Wings, 7-5, on Saturday. It wasn't just the parent club that scored a come-from-behind victory on Saturday night. The FeHogs trailed 4-0, after five innings, but exploded for six runs in the sixth. J.J. Furmaniak keyed the rally with a grand slam. (The Red Wings really should have LOOGYfied Furmaniak.)
Brian Mazone, the IronPigs' journeyman southpaw, continued to reacquaint himself with mediocre starting pitching, after focusing on woeful relieving during his time in Albuquerque (earlier this season). Mazone got his pitch count up to fifty-six on Saturday, and permitted four earned runs, over four innings (six hits, zero walks/three strikeouts, two HR allowed).
Steven Register finished up with two scoreless innings, recording his third save.
The FeHogs' bats were 6 for 10, with RISP.
The Reading Phillies (AA) trailed the Harrisburg Senators, 5-1, after an inning. They closed to within 5-4, before falling by that score. Tyson Brummett, bumped from the rotation when the Yohan Flande Era began, has been ineffective in relief. Brummett got another chance to start on Saturday, and was ineffective as a starter. He was responsible for the five Senators' runs in the bottom of the first, and only survived two innings (five hits, zero walks/one strikeout). Brian Stavisky was 2 for 4, with a two-run homer. Quintin Berry had three singles.
The Clearwater Threshers (A) capitalized on strong pitching, and three Daytona Cubs' errors, in a 5-3 Threshers win. Michael Galen Cisco pitched superbly, allowing only two runs (one earned), in six innings (six hits, one walk/two strikeouts). Cisco is now 6-1, with a 2.48 ERA (1.96 ERA as a starter). The twenty-two year old northpaw appears to want Tyson Brummett's roster spot. (Beware: Cisco has a 3.36 K/BB ratio, but he has been a little lucky also (.267 BABIP/80.3% LOB.)

Bunts and Balks (7/6)
The Toronto Blue Jays are now, reportedly, "open to offers" for ace Roy Halladay. Halladay would be an excellent #3 starter, behind J.A. Happ and Cole Hamels, making the Phils even more formidable in the playoffs. With the possible exceptions of Kyle Drabek and Michael Taylor, the Phillies should consider dealing any of their prospects. Carlos Carrasco? Andrew Carpenter? Julian Sampson? Lou Marson? Dominic Brown? Michael Taylor? Yohan Flande? Jack Taschner? Steve Susdorf? Vance Worley? The Phillies have the available prospects to get this done.
(Prediction: Halladay goes to the Yankees, who eat the salary of overpaid/underperforming Jays' outfielder Vernon Wells, to get the deal done. Hopefully, the Jays won't want to trade Halladay within their own division/league...)
Jack is back! Jack Taschner was optioned to Lehigh Valley (AAA), after the DFA Plan failed to expunge him from the organization. Taschner is a sunk cost at this point, might as well have him in AAA, eating an occasional partial inning. If the parent club needs a pitcher to appear once a month, with negligible effectiveness, Taschner would be the top recall option. (Had hoped to retire the "Jack Taschner" tag, but, alas, that day has not yet come.)
Raul Ibanez (finally) made a rehab start, for Reading (AA). The All-Star outfielder batted three times, going 0 for 2, with a walk. His injured groin is showing improvement, and he expects to play a few games with Lehigh Valley, before a possible weekend return for the P-Phils.
The Lehigh Valley IronPigs were trounced by the Syracuse SkyChiefs, 9-3, on Monday. The game wasn't really that close- the FeHogs scored two of their runs in garbage time (ninth inning, trailing by eight runs). LV had eleven hits, but only three were for extra bases (all doubles), and left ten men on base. Starter Brian Mazone was removed after fifty-three pitches, allowing three runs (one earned), in two and two-thirds mediocre innings.
The Reading Phillies (AA) wasted a strong performance by untouchable prospect Kyle Drabek, in a 4-3 loss to the Connecticut Defenders. Drabek permitted two runs in seven innings (six hits, one walk/six strikeouts), leaving with the score tied at two. Deposed starter Tyson Brummett, who lost his rotation spot to Yohan Flande, gave up two runs in the eighth, and took the loss. Pitching in relief has not been working out for Brummett (5.33 relief innings, 5 earned runs allowed.) Brian Stavisky went 3 for 4, accumulating half of the R-Phils' hits. Connecticut is now a ridiculous 30-12 on the road.
The Clearwater Threshers (A) lost to the Lakeland Flying Tigers, 12-0. Definitely one of the Flying Tigers' most successful missions. Drew Naylor took the loss, in a six-inning/five-run outing. Naylor was knocked around for nine hits and a walk (three strikeouts).

Bunts and Balks (6/21)
Brad Lidge is expected to rejoin the Phils by the end of the week, with Scott Eyre returning by the end of the following week. This likely means a return to the "Plus Eight" bullpen, and some time in historic Lehigh Valley for Messrs. Taschner and Bako.
Ryan Howard spent the weekend in and out of the hospital with flu-like symptoms.
Hopefully, he'll be OK for the interleague road trip. No one wants to see Eric Bruntlett DH'ing.
The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (AAA) finally lost again, 4-2, to the Norfolk Tides. Mike Spidale responded to a promotion to the leadoff spot with an 0 for 5 day, dropping his AAA avg. to .316. Andrew Carpenter received his first loss, in seven decisions, permitting three runs (nine hits, one walk/three strikeouts) in six innings.
The Reading Phillies (AA) lost to the Harrisburg Senators, 8-7. The winning Senators run scored on a bases-loaded walk with two outs in top of the ninth inning, permitted by lefty Mike Zagurski. The R-Phils trailed 4-0, before they got their first at-bat. Brian Stavisky and Jeremy Slayden each had four-hit games. Vance Worley had an ineffective start, surrendering five runs, on eight hits and two walks, surviving only four innings. The R-Phils seemed primed for a walk-off victory, inspired by Twisted Sister's finest, before their final at-bat. But former Phils prospect Zack Segovia finished them off in the ninth.

Bunts and Balks (6/10)
There is a commercial for the new reality show about the Phillies' bullpen! "The Pen" premieres Sunday at 8pm, on the MLB Network. This is a great opportunity to learn more about mythical right-hander Clay Condrey, as well as learn why Jack Taschner is still with the club. I can't wait! Commercial can be viewed here.
The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (AAA) had the night off, and host the Charlotte Knights on Thursday. Drew Carpenter gets the start for the IronPigs.
The Reading Phillies (AA) waited out the elements, in the form of a long rain delay, and beat the Trenton Thunder, 4-1. The R-Phils are now a season-high eleven games over .500. Top prospect/southpaw Joe Savery improved to 7-1, allowing one run in six and two-thirds innings (four hits, zero walks, five strikeouts). First baseman Brian Stavisky had a pair of home runs, with his parents in attendance! (I do not know Brian, or his parents, but this was mentioned during the broadcast.) The R-Phils continue to play well, even after losing catcher Paul Bako, their starter for about ten days, to the P-Phils. Fortunately, Bako taught R-Phils catcher Tuffy Gosewisch all he knows. The R-Phils left 16 runners on base in the game.
The Clearwater Threshers (A) lost 4-3 to the Palm Beach Cardinals. Clearwater made three errors, gave up twelve hits, got a two-inning (three runs, four hits, two walks/zero strikeouts) start from Julian Sampson, and lost on an unearned run in the ninth. Let's forget about this one...
